Makaton in the Community Level 1

Today over 100,000 children and adults use Makaton symbols and signs, either as their main method of communication or as a way to support speech.

This training provides a practical introduction to the Makaton Language Programme. The sessions include discussing commonly asked questions, hints and tips for effective signing and symbol use and how to start using Makaton in everyday situations at home or work. You will also learn the signs and symbols from Stages 1 and 2, and some of the Additional stage, of the Core Vocabulary which covers a variety of common words familiar to children used on a daily basis. Approximately 150 signs and symbols are taught during level 1.Level 1 is made up of 2 modules and will be delivered over 2 x 3.5 hour sessions. (It is essential to attend both sessions in sequence order.)Each participant will be provided with workshop manuals which include the Makaton signs and symbols and they will receive a certificate of attendance on completion.

Makaton Level 1 training is suitable for parents, carers and professionals. Your Makaton Tutor will be Sarah Arthur.

Meet your trainer

My name is Sarah Arthur and I live in Grimsby, North East Lincolnshire. I am a licensed Makaton Tutor and a Mum of 2 children. I have also worked in primary school for 8 years with a particular interest in communication and speech and language development.

Sarah Arthur Makaton trainer

I first started learning Makaton in 2015 when I started working with children with additional needs in a mainstream school. I began looking at ways I could help develop their language skills and developed a love of learning Makaton. I soon went on to complete all levels, before going on to become a licensed tutor.

I am passionate about Makaton, spreading awareness and helping to provide inclusion for Makaton users in the wider community.

I have taught a range of parents, carers and professionals and also run a Makaton club for children of mixed abilities in a mainstream primary setting. I enjoy creating resources to help engage children in activities with use of Makaton and enjoy putting Makaton into song!
