Ambitious new vision unveiled for Council’s Children’s Services

“Our children are our future” – the words of outgoing Director of Children’s Services, Janice Spencer OBE, at the unveiling of the new vision for children, young people and their families in North East Lincolnshire.

The new vision, which centres on providing quality support at the right time to vulnerable children and young people in North East Lincolnshire, was welcomed by incoming Director of Children’s Services, Ann-Marie Matson.

The vision has been developed by children, young people and professionals living and working in North East Lincolnshire, and sets out an ambition for the local authority to continue to work with partners including local schools, community groups and charities, to maintain strong and effective support.

The Council’s children’s services have been working with neighbouring Lincolnshire County Council over the last two years to improve its services along with a Department of Education-appointed Children’s Commissioner.

During the event, held at the end of November, representative from local schools, Humberside Police, the NHS, Councillors, the voluntary, community and social enterprise sector, and the Department of Education, came together to recognise the improvement work that has taken place already, as well as hearing more about the next steps, and the importance of children in the future of the borough.

Speaking after the event, Councillor Margaret Cracknell, portfolio holder for children and education at North East Lincolnshire Council, said:

“We have grown immensely, and that is testament to the support of Council staff, our schools, our partners, and of course the support of our children, young people and their families.

“As a local authority, we have a duty to support our most vulnerable. Our children are our future.

“It’s important that we support them when they are at their most vulnerable.

“We have come a long way in the last two years, but we still have a way to go. I have confidence in our social workers, our family hubs staff, our business support officers, colleagues working in children’s homes, our foster carers and others. Together, we can really ensure that every child, young person and family is supported at the right time in North East Lincolnshire.”

At the event, the new logo for North East Lincolnshire Council’s Children’s Services was unveiled, with four youngsters awarded prizes for creating the winning drawings which feature on the final design.

Attendees at the event also heard an impassioned speech from a young person who grew up in care, a local head teacher, and from a social worker who travelled to the UK from South Africa.
