SEND Newsletter- Monday 30 January 2023

National Storytelling Week

National Storytelling Week takes place from 30 January to 5 February 2023. It’s a celebration of the power of sharing stories. Stories teach us about the world, they allow us to step into someone else’s shoes and feel empathy, they help us to relax and escape and they can help develop essential literacy skills.

SEND Books near you

Did you know that our team has hand picked a variety of books on SEND and stocked them in our local libraries.

There are books of all kinds written for children, young people, and their families.

There are popular books written by parent carers, children and young people, and professionals who all share their experience and advice about SEND.

Titles include:

  • Noah chases the wind
  • Leah’s voice
  • All My Stripes, tells the story of a zebra named Zane who has autism and worries about not fitting in
  • We’re amazing 123, This Sesame Street storybook focuses on Elmo’s friend Julia, who has autism.
  • My friend with autism, Beverly Bishop
  • My life with autism, Eight-year-old Ethan Rice shared his story with others to raise awareness and show what autism means to him
  • The Adventures of Pickle, Author: Zelda Mothins

Wheelchair workshop

Go Kid Go have a free wheelchair skills workshop coming up in Grimsby on Sunday 5 February and it would be great if you could pass the attached flyer to any families that you think may benefit and share it on your social media.

The workshop is suitable for young wheelchair users from 2-18 years of age.  On the workshop we teach skills such as coping with slopes and rough ground, back wheel balancing, road safety and emergency evacuation techniques.

We can work with manual or powered wheelchair users. We also play games like wheelchair basketball and try out wheelchair dance. We bring extra chairs so mums, dads and siblings can get involved and join in the games. Whilst the objectives are serious the workshops are good fun! We often have a mixed range of abilities and find that everyone gains some new skills from the workshops.

It is common for some young children to have challenging behaviour, particularly if they have additional needs. This workshop is being delivered as part of the Autism in Schools programme and will explore some of the issues around behaviour and will look at ways of supporting and encouraging your child. You will gain a better understanding of why children behave the way they do and learn ways to handle difficult situations in a calm, stress-free manner. Group discussions will explore what might help and how to get support and help.
